We signed up for PayPal Giving Fund (PPGF) to avoid Paypal Fees on donations and gain a 1% additional contribution for #GivingTuesday on Dec. 1, 2015. After the fact and numerous inquiries, we were informed by a Ryanne Putnam of PPGF that we will not know how much was received in donations for #GivingTuesday until December 25th, after the gift distribution. I can only say that I am stunned. This information is not at all clear in the PPGF sign up process or polices. I understood clearly that payments were distributed only monthly, but nothing ever indicated that donations would only be visible after the funds were disbursed. I even emailed to be certain that we would be able to see donor information for acknowledgement purposes, but nothing was ever said about it being for only PAST donors. A development professional would never even imagine that sort of situation.

This is truly counter to all fundamental principles of fundraising. Altho PayPal Giving Fund has receipted each donor, which is terrific, we cannot also thank them for nearly a month. I also understand they are PPGF donors technically, but most will perceive that they gave to my nonprofit. That is terrible donor stewardship and can reflect poorly on the PPGF nonprofit partners. Best practice indicates donors should hear from the organization they benefitted in 24-48 hours. Our donors via the Giving Fund will remain anonymous for us until the end of this month.

Finally, we joined the Giving Fund to receive donations fee-free and gain your 1% match - much appreciated - during #GivingTuesday. That effort is very real-time and charities updated their supporters throughout the day with campaign progress reports and more appeals to give before midnight. We were unable to do so as we have no idea how our campaign performed, despite having promised supporters such updates throughout the day. This is extremely distressing, leaving us embarrassed and looking like we don't know what we're doing. Had we understood the PPGF process clearly, we likely would have forgone using the Giving Fund and paid the processing fees via our regular PayPal account. #GivingTuesday dynamics were all about the "now".

On December 2 I responded to Ryanne's email as above and requested reconsideration of this policy, clarification of it online, and at least minimal statistics for the total amount and number of gifts to our organization on #GivingTuesday. No one from PPGF has replied, despite additonal email requests. This is totally unprofessional and unacceptable.

We will no longer be using the PayPal Giving Fund, as much due to the lack of responsiveness as well as the unprofessional procedures.
